Post for Sun. I thought it was a great comment Dr. Clossen made a signing a one year contract as a principal. It would be a little assuring to know that you could still have your tenure if things did not work out the way you thought they would. I know this is only if you became a principal in the district you are teaching in presently. Good advice on dismissing non tenured teachers. No reason given no headaches later. However, this is hard for most of us because we feel it our duty to teach them how they could do better. I feel I have learned alot about the legal side of education from this classs as well as others. Most teachers I feel know very little of their rights or the postion administration is in. Whether I become a administrator or not this program has made me a better teacher and abroader minded employee. I have met alot of very nice people in this program both students and teachers and I wish all of you the best in your professional lives but more importantly in your personal lives. Good Luck from the Leprechaun!

I found it interesting that Dr. Closen called union representatives, "Goons." I found it comical. I don't think I am a Goon, yet I do feel a responsibility to represent our staff during negotiations, with grievances, and to sit in on management disputes. I love the fact that RIEA has taken a hard line on teachers who dress inappropriately, or whose behavior is out of line. They simply have to go up the line to the IEA representative because we will not support teachers who show cleavage, wear see through clothes, or men who wear short shorts, etc. P.E. teachers wear shorts and occasionally in August, some men wear shorts but they are more like Bermuda shorts than "go wash your car shorts." I believe [strongly] that we have to honor our profession. We do that by being professional, using the "King's English" when it should be formal English, dressing professionally, and behaving in a manner that a professional businessman would. [I refuse to say business person.] I find it hurtful to constantly read about the teachers in America being responsible for our failing schools. It seems to me that many politicians, parents, and many people who simply breathe air feel that we are teachers because we failed at something else. Our Superintendent, Associate Superintendent, and the administrative team worked through negotiations with us without their lawyer. We come together without hostility and our main purpose in negotiations is to do what is right using what is available, be it time, money, or adjustments to personnel. Our union is strong in that we hold fast when it is necessary. We are not foolish, nor do we come to the table with something to prove. It makes me wonder if Dr. Closen has had negative experiences with unions. To hear him stereotype union reps is not an issue with me. I find it fun. At this point, I find him a reasonable man. I believe sitting across from him at the negotiating table, I would still find him a reasonable man. What say you?
