Great presentations and discussions

All of the presenters did a very nice job today. Before today's class I had never really thought about coaching evaluations, I am going to check into our school policy this week and see how we handle them. I enjoyed the student led conference model. I think that is a great way to make the student's establish more ownership of their learning and work. Our school district does not implement student led conferences, but I wish they would. As a parent, I would really appreciate it if my son led the conference and built a portfolio. It would deepen his understanding and communications skills about his learning.

GRRRRR! I can't post an original blog because of my CIPA filter. GRRRRR! However, your comment was very interesting about sitting down with your son. I can't say that I did much talking about my son or daughter's work. They got "A's" and I left it at that. Maybe they were successful because I didn't stick my nose into their own successful achievement. We kept our expectations high. I made sure that we had school supplies at home and that the t.v. was shut off. But, since we do Student Led Conferences, I have been amazed at how it is the first time that many of the parents have ever spoken about school with their child. You can see in their eyes how they are realizing a whole new perspective of their child. Their face is tinged with a little embarrassment and a lot of pride. Even the naughty students are proud of something in their portfolio. I work hard to keep everything positive. However, I am gently brutal when it comes to students being a slacker. The parents need to realize that if their child doesn't plug in and turn on, that they may be supporting him/her most of their life. Forming partnerships with parents has worked for me. I prod, interact with humor, and love the lazy little nerdling through the difficult years of junior high. I expect no less than his/her personal best!
