Sunday's class

The discussion on the sick days and professional was interesting. In our district, if we don't take any sicks days throughout the year, then the last two teacher work days at the end of the year, the teacher has an option to work them and then get extra pay or the teacher doesn't have to work them. If a teacher has 1-2 sick days then it is one day where they must work and then the other day is extra pay. Over 2 sick days, both days must be worked w/o extra pay. I like this b/c it is great incentive for teachers not to take sick leave, at least for me anyway. In 8 years of teaching, I have missed one day due to sickness and that was actually not being sick, but getting kicked in the head by a horse and was forced to stay home for a day.
We have had teachers in the past milk sick days. I would not be able to live with myself if I milked the system.

Teachers have believed for years that they are "entitled" to their sick days and "mental health I ask days off" and I have a problem understanding that philosophy. I ask myself ...and why did they go into education? When I worked in Geneseo, a teacher fished off the Green River bridge on a beautiful spring day. Isn't that blatantly thumbing one's nose at taxpayers, who are not only paying him for that day off, but are also paying his substitute teacher? Where is the feeling gone that it is a privilege to get a holiday once a month? Let me see! My recollection has Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, and Thanksgiving, and then Christmas. Then we built in Martin Luther King Day, President's Day, pulled in Good Friday, Memorial Day and some schools honor Chanuka, Yom Kippur, etc. And, we get a Winter break, Spring break, along with eight or more weeks off in the summer. Don't be belly aching about having to go to work. Change jobs! No one should have to go to work when it doesn't bring pleasure [of some kind] even it is the camaraderie in the hallway. Fess up! Some teachers take advantage of sick days. Teacher's Retirement has tried to reward those who stay in school and teach by allowing two years of sick leave as retirement credit. I am no Pollyanna. But, I believe our profession has teachers who take advantage of the system, who wear clothes that are revealing, or come to school looking like they really were going to wash the car. They excuse this behavior by saying, "Who cares!"

Why is it that what he says is funny, or is it how he says it?
