Sunday Thoughts
One aha moment for me was dealing with the role of the guidance counselor and some of the roles that an administrator sometimes assigns to this person. Dr. Closen made reference to the fact often times an administrator will assign clerical tasks to someone in this position. Unfortunately, I think that this position often becomes too much of a "catch all" position. We have both a first year principal and a first year guidance counselor in our building, so it has been a learning experience for both of these people while trying to manage student and staff schedule accommodations (among other things). I can definitely see the importance of protecting the role of the position, as it is often one that gets put on the chopping block when it is budget cutting time--especially in the middle schools where it is such a needed position. Districts also end up combining the roles of social worker, counselor, etc together in order to cut costs.

I think my Ahh momment came with the understanding of having references of references. I also enjoyed the story of how you were able to build personal relationships with the students. What racial challanges have you faced when you taught in the inner city of Peoria? Example, at my old school a lot of teachers were afraid to address black students for fear that they would be called racists. They would often talk to me about it and I have told them to still address the issue. I have told them that it is the message not the messenger. How would you address a problem like this to a majority white staff when the students are either low economic or a racial minority. How did you get over the idea that its not about color? How do you teach other faculty about building personal relationships? I understand that by being an educational leader that you are also a role model/ parent but some believe that they have already raised there kids and they don't need to raise 30, 60 or 90 kids.
