Thoughts on class 10/12

When we were talking this morning about administrators living in the district where they worked, it touched a topic that I feel very strongly about. I do believe that administration in a district should live in and their children should attend schools in that district. In my mind, what message are you sending when you live and/or send your children to another district. We have a lot of this going on in my district. I believe in loyalty and as a parent I would wonder why administrators are saying we have the best schools in the state yet choose to send their children to the neighboring district. I also belive that it sends the message that maybe our schools are not safe or not as good. Last but not least, your livelihood depends on the very district that your are choosing not to support through property taxes. Not sure how one can justify this.

What about an administrator who lives outside of the district because his or her spouse has a position in another district? I don't think that you can be so quick to judge an administrator’s motives. Just because he or she lives outside of the district doesn't mean they aren't giving the position their all and totally supportive of the school. There are many reasons why it just may not be feasible for an administrator to live in the district. There are also many other issues that will come up for us as administrators by having our own children in our districts. Believe me I grew up as an administrators child and have experienced being a child in the district and outside. I believe we have to look at the bigger picture and our nations schools. All of our schools need good administrators whether they live in the district or outside. Yes it can be good to live in the district, but living inside the district should not be the most essential requirement or in my opinion even very high on the list of important attributes of the candidate for a principals position.

Overall, I have to agree with Brian on this one. There are three administrative positions in my district and all three administrators live outside of the district. All of their tax monies are being filtered into other districts. One of the administrators has children who attend a parochial school! Our closest administrator lives 25 miles away. Dr Closen was right when he stated that many will tell you in an interview that they will move to the district and then not follow through with it. I have witnessed that firsthand. I feel that it is important for an administrator to take ownership in his/her district and part of that loyalty falls into the residency area.
